Wylie's Learning Lagoon - Fraction Edition - Part 7 of 9

Let’s move into more fraction work this week with MA.7.NSO.2.2!

How can we support students in learning this concept?

Before students see this problem:

  • Rational numbers are at the heart of all grade 7 learning. Have students spend some time practicing with integer operations and order of operations to review prior learning.

  • Small group rotations may help target individual student needs, such as assisting students who are still struggling with adding, subtracting, or dividing fractions. Look back at our problems from grades 4-6 to help support students struggling with fractions.

Give students this problem:

  • Have students spend 2-3 minutes working on the problem individually; encourage them to star expressions they are unsure of (such as where to start)

  • Have students work with a partner to compare answers and help each other with expressions they may have missed.

  • Ask students to share their answers with the whole group. Ask students to justify their answers; if students identify an incorrect expression, ask other students to justify why that expression is not equivalent to -14.

After students see this problem:

  • Ask pairs of students to come up with a different expression that is also equivalent to -14. Have them record their expression and work to show it is equivalent to -14 on a slip of paper to hand in.

    • Encourage students to use multiple operations and/or fractions and decimals.

  • Collect student expressions and display a few on the board for the class to see. Have students spend 2-3 minutes on the expressions to justify whether they are equivalent to -14.

    • If an expression is not equivalent to -14, ask students to discuss what might have gone wrong in their thinking. Encourage them to fix the expression so that it is equivalent to -14.
